Denver's songs for his home state have attracted many people to Colorado. G. Brown of the Colorado Music Hall of Fame says it is true that John Denver is unlike any other performer who has the recognizable image of Colorado. In 2011, Denver was chosen as the Hall of Fame's very first inductee. To many, Denver is the Colorado image. Certainly in my travels you come across someone on the opposite end of the planet, or someone who is from New Zealand and you say 'I'm from Colorado and the first thing that comes out of their mouths is Oh John Denver! Brown said. Take Me Home Country Roads is Denver's only Top 10 Hit as a solo artist after having worked within small Folk Music groups. The song was composed by Bill Danoff. Danoff composed the track along with Johnny Cash in mind but the moment Denver saw an early rendition immediately, he realized the track could become an instant hit. The song was performed in Washington D.C. to a massive crowd, Denver released the song a couple of days afterward.
